Position overview

As the Controller you will be responsible for the accounting operations of Teaching Strategies and its subsidiaries including the production of monthly, quarterly and annual financial reports and maintenance of an adequate system of accounting records and a comprehensive set of controls, all designed to mitigate risk, enhance the accuracy of the company's reported financial results, and ensure that reported results comply with generally accepted accounting principles.  You will also assist in the preparation of budgets and forecasts, preparation and review of corporate tax returns and completion of the annual external audit.  The Controller is also responsible for managing the daily operations of Teaching Strategies' Accounting department, supervising a team of eight.


  • Bring industry best practices to elevate the accounting function through process improvement initiatives
  • Supervise and assist in the month end closing and financial reporting process to continually drive down time-to-close while maintaining accuracy of reporting
  • Produce KPIs and MD&A to accompany monthly financial report including analysis of results, variances and trends
  • Identify and execute on cost reduction opportunities
  • Work with department leaders to lead them through monthly review of department financials and forecasting
  • Assist with the annual budget and monthly forecast processes
  • Lead the annual external audit
  • Coordinate the filing of federal and state income tax returns
  • Review and approve invoices and expense reports
  • Manage cash balances and associated check and wiring activities
  • Strategically manage collections function and report on A/R aging
  • Research accounting issues for compliance with US GAAP
  • Diligence and integrate acquisitions, which may require converting target financial reporting to US GAAP
  • Optimize financial system configurations to automate accounting processes and create a highly scalable accounting function
  • Document and maintain SOPs and process narratives to ensure business continuity and audit documentation
  • Assist in special projects and reporting requests as necessary



  • Required (no stretch):
    • Active CPA license
    • 3+ years of Controller experience 
    • 4-6 years of experience in accounting at for-profit corporation
    • Big Four public accounting experience
    • Experience managing GL at company with >$75M revenue and SaaS products
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
    • Strong organizational and time management skills
    • Strong command of Microsoft Excel
