Position overview:

If you are a talented Database Administrator who can thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced, project-driven environment then you have the opportunity to join the technology group at Teaching Strategies in Bethesda, MD. Working with a team software developers you will help design, develop, and implement our industry leading Web-based assessment system and other new products used by early childhood educators. We are looking for an enthusiastic experienced Database Administrator who is excited about developing scalable distributed applications in MS SQL Server and is also willing to learn and apply new technologies. The candidate must be proficient in MS SQL Server administration and development techniques, have a background in application development, and demonstrate a working knowledge of Object-Oriented Programming.

Specific roles and responsibilities: 

  • Participates in the design, development and implementation of Database Architectures for Web-based and mobile products used by early childhood educators
  • Manages the deployment and upgrade process of related application databases Supports and maintains existing databases and applications
  • Determines the most effective way to increase performance as performance issues arise
  • Documents the company's database environment
  • Documents the new and changes of Database related code and provides user documentation
  • Participates in code reviews
  • Resolves technical issues through debugging, research, and investigation
  • Ensures all database servers are backed up in a way that meets the business's Recovery Point Objectives (RPO)
  • Tests backups to ensure we can meet the business Recovery Time Objectives (RTO)
  • Works with QA to review test cases and ensure proper test case coverage
  • Contributes to the continued optimization of team work processes and practices by actively participating in the Agile process


  •  2-5 years of database administration experience working on complex Web-based applications required
  • B.S. in computer science or related discipline preferred
  • Database related Certifications are a plus
  • Experience designing entity diagrams and creating SQL scripts
  • Experience writing stored procedures for data access and update
  • Experience tuning SQL queries and/or stored procedures 
  • Experience with Replication and Cluster Services is preferred
  • Experience with large scale data sets in a high performance environment is preferred
  • Experience with a database deployment tools and processes a plus Experience with developing SSIS packages a plus
  • Experience with MySQL or PostgreSQL is a plus
  • Practical experience building applications with CFML, Java, PHP.NET, C#
  • Ability to analyze complex and large amounts of data Interest in Data Warehouse and Business Intelligence a plus
  • Experience with Subversion, BitBucket or other version control system
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Must be detail oriented and deliver quality consistent results in a timely manner
  • Desire to work in a highly collaborative, creative, and challenging environment
